Alden 270

Happy New Year from Port Townsend Washington!!! I am planning a trip to Maine to catch the Portland Boat Builder show and would like to connect with anyone who has one of these lovely boats. I am currently up to my ears in the restoration of Revenge #270h. New keel timber, floor timbers, frames, planks and a seamingly endless list of other items negatively impacted by 80 years of iron. I would like to visit anyone who may have on of the 270's for reference and general info regarding the restoration I am currently undertaking.

Regards,

Adam Henley

Hi Adam-

Two things:

Peter Thompson would be a good person to talk to about restoring REVENGE. He has been doing a tremendous job with his 309 BLACKBIRD.

Also, we'd love it if you could put up some details on REVENGE in the Schooners section of the website. Have a look at the COMET II and BLACKBIRD sections for ideas, and drop me a line if I can help.

I have updated info and have put some recent photos. I will make periodic chages as I download more photographs.

Good idea about coming out east to the Maine Boat Builders Show. You'll meet a lot of skilled and experienced people and get plenty of help.

Bob Pulsch from NJ did a total restoration of a 1911 Crowninshield (Heron) a few years ago. He did a first class job with her, and he will likely be in Portland at ASA's booth. He took plenty of photos along the way. Bob has mentioned the Bud McIntosh book as a very helpful guide.

re: Alden 270 -309s

Adam, Feel free to hang out in Freeport for the show. We'll have a number of ASA folks over at the house, if we overflow, good priced hotels are nearby. Take a look at Blackbird when you come up. I have not researched remaining 270's, but know very few un-restored 309s remain (L (in Ohio) and K (Marilyn)). Several other boats have either been glassed over or had new modern hulls built. We looked at a gutted 270 (Sea Waif - perhaps former Sea Lady) at Goudy Stevens in 1992 before we found Blackbird. You may have the most complete 270 remaining. I remember seeing her in Maine years ago before you picker her up. Sounds like you and I are finding similiar conditions. Peter

Adam....I am presently working on installing restoration pictures
of Heron on the ASA website. I think you will find the pictures
interesting. I plan to go to the Maine Show and I will be happy
to talk to you there.

I am researching my greatuncle's Alden 270, built as "Vagabond" in 1927. Called "Yolu San" and "Black Douglas" when John L. Fleming had her in Larchmont, NY.
Sold in the 1950s, I think. I never sailed on her, but my late dad did and became a lifelong rag sailor.
Any photos, or photos of 270 sisters would be fun. All my dad's photos were taken of other boats from her deck - I'd like a photo of her or a sister boat for the grandkids to see.
Thanks,

Named "Full Swing" in the 1950s; ex "Black Douglas"; "Yolu San"; built as "Vagabond" in 1927.

Any info much appreciated.

You might try contacting Adam Henly, Revenge. The 309s and 270's are almost identical and there are photos of 2 309s on the website Blackbird and Spendid on the schooner page
