Nina Lost at Sea

I was shocked and saddened to learn today that David Dyche, his wife Rosemary and son David, and four crew were lost at sea in June of this year onboard Nina, the much beloved and fabled 85 year old Burgess designed stays’l schooner.  I was surprised we had not heard of this tragic event sooner.  Apparently she was lost at sea while hove to during a storm in the Tasman Sea between New Zealand and  Australia and after an extensive search no trace of the vessel or the crew was ever found.  He was an experienced captain and long time owner of Nina and kept the vessel on a thorough maintenance program.  Something unexpected and catastrophic presumably must have occurred.  There is an article in the September 2013 Soundings with more details.  There is a also chapter on Nina by David in the book Great American Schooner Yachts.  A sorrowful loss of both life and an iconic schooner.   Fair Winds to them all.
