Good use for old pitch

For years I have marveled at the material that had been used to fill small checks running with the grain in the bow sprit as it had a vitrous luster and held varnish very well. Several weeks ago when I was re-doing the sprit I realized that material was pine pitch. When I pulled the keel timber from the boat I had saved the pine pitch that had been poured in the bilge between the garboard and keel timber.

I had a few new and old checks to repair so I heated some old pitch and laid it in with a hot puttyknife. Cools instantly, cleans up with a few strokes of a sharp chisel, and sand paper and is ready to varnish over in a few minutes. Great material. Real time saver. Keeps the water out of checks.
